What Is Your Body Trying to Tell You?
Your body is always speaking to you. Sometimes it whispers with gentle cues — a yawn, a tight muscle, a subtle headache. Other times it shouts through illness, those pains that just become normal, or complete depletion and exhaustion. These things we are experiencing are more than just inconveniences to “push through” — they’re messages, and learning to listen can transform your health and wellbeing.
Symptoms as Signals
Tension, fatigue, digestive upsets, or recurring aches aren’t random. They’re often your body’s way of telling you that something is out of wack. From a naturopathic perspective, these physical signs may point to nutritional deficiencies, poor sleep, or hormonal imbalances for example. But from a mind–body perspective, they can also signal unresolved emotions, not managing our stress, or the weight of experiences we haven’t fully faced.
For example:
- Neck and shoulder tension may reflect feeling overburdened or unable to “put something down.” Being hunched over with constantly shrugged shoulders can be your defence system, making your body smaller and prepared for whatever threat is next to come along, even if it is not a physical threat as it expects.
- Persistent fatigue may speak to emotional depletion, not just physical tiredness. You may have been “running on empty” for too long, perhaps carrying responsibilities or emotions without adequate rest or support. Even if your diet and sleep seems fine, emotional strain can quietly drain your energy reserves until your body insists you slow down. Or maybe the caffeine and carbs you find yourself surviving on doesn't quite cut the mustard anymore.
- Digestive discomfort can often mirror difficulty “processing” a stressful situation. We think of eating food as vital for survival, and it is for long term survival, but imagine you are being chased by a predator....you're not stopping for lunch are you? If your body senses that you are in a stressful situation, digestive ability is naturally reduced which can lead to digestive issues. It does this to send the body's reserves to the brain and to the muscle because these are both vital for survival in stressful situations.
The Stress Connection
When life feels overwhelming, the body shifts into survival mode. Stress hormones flood the system, and resources are diverted away from digestion, repair, and immune function. This is helpful in the short term, but when stress becomes chronic, the body starts to struggle — and the symptoms get louder.
Creating Space to Listen
Instead of ignoring your discomfort or masking it with quick fixes, try creating a space to ask, What might my body be saying?
- Pause: When you feel tension, fatigue, or pain, take a few slow breaths and notice where it sits in your body.
- Reflect: Ask yourself if any stress, conflict, or unresolved emotions might be connected to what you’re feeling.
- Act: Support your body with rest, hydration, nourishing foods, and stress-reducing activities like walking, journaling, or gentle stretching. Figure out what stress management is for you. Something that manages the stress for one person might be stressful for another. Here's a little tip – tuning out to Netflix or doom scrolling on social media is not stress management – it is self-soothing and that is a short-term fix only.
